The LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project has participated in the regional event for technical audiences: ‘Successful actions in the management of climate-related risks’ organised by Neiker and framed in the Triple-C project. It took place on 1 December in Arkaute (Álava), where the heads of several climate change adaptation projects from Spain, France, Portugal, Ireland and England shared the actions carried out in different areas.

Iñigo Urrutikoetxea Álvarez, member of the Urban Klima 2050 coordinating team, participated in the event with the intervention ‘Implementation of the Climate Change Strategy of the Basque Country – KLIMA 2050’. In it, he reviewed the main lines of action of the Basque Country’s largest climate action project for the coming years, “a long road to improve climate governance at various levels through collaborative projects”, he stressed.

He summarised the actions being carried out in the Basque Country in urban and peri-urban areas, in river basins and in the coastal area, as well as highlighting the work being done in the field of analysis, empowerment and management in relation to climate change. In this sense, Urrutikoetxea highlighted the “importance of co-responsibility and the advantages and opportunities of implementing a shared project”.

On 17 October, as part of the Triple-C project, ACMG organised a day on climate change (and more specifically on the risk of frost), its impacts and solutions.
The day was held in partnership with GIS Fruits, which brings together numerous actors in fruit production, INRAE and the Quae publishing house. The event took place in the heart of the Moyenne-Garonne, at the Rex cinema in Tonneins (47), and was attended by stakeholders from numerous departments.
Around 100 people attended. The objective of inviting a varied audience, technical as well as scientific and political, was achieved: decision-makers, as well as numerous leaders of agricultural cooperatives, farm managers, farmers, researchers, agricultural technicians, representatives of research centres, agricultural consultants, representatives of chambers of agriculture, etc. were present.
The afternoon programme was based on lectures on the risks and solutions to climate change, as well as numerous testimonies. During the conference, the Triple C project platform was presented.

2 round tables allowed to gather:

Key field experiences for successful adaptation.

Visions for the future of fruit production.

On 17 June 2022, on the occasion of the National Agriculture Days, the ACMG presented the results of a sociological survey carried out within the framework of the Triple C project among farmers and mayors in the South-West of France in order to collect their visions, needs and obstacles in the context of climate change.

38 people were registered to attend the conference including Mayors, journalists, students, farmers, heads of institutions.

294 farmers and 74 mayors testified and shed light on several points :

The obstacles to current adaptation

The needs in the face of climate change and thus the future lines of development and research

Communication tools to be promoted by the institutions

Communication methods to be implemented by the Triple C project but also by all those wishing to communicate on climate change.

The levers to be used to establish a collective intelligence around climate hazards.

Here are some results:

Almost all respondents are aware of climate change and characterise it as an increase in temperature and intense weather events”. However, if for the farmers, the main problems for their activity are drought and frost, for the mayors, it would be floods and drought. This difference in perception of emergencies can be explained by daily experience. “Mayors have not experienced or integrated this risk at the same level as farmers, which compromises adaptation.

Another interesting result is that the ACMG asked farmers, via an open-ended question, how they imagine their farm to be in 10 years’ time. 84 people think it will simply be compromised, bankrupt or sold, 72 do not know, while around 30 think they will adapt to the situation. Growing new crops seems to be the most common solution for adaptation, and some have already done so. This mode of adaptation leads to a real mutation of the watersheds at the landscape level, but also at the cultural, economic and historical levels, etc. Another solution lies in the management of water resources, with more than 70 farmers having declared that they have increased their irrigation capacities.

The sixth fact-finding mission of the Triple-C project was organised by the Technological University of the Shannon: Midwest (TUS) on 22-23 March in Thurles.

Due to the improvement that is being reflected in relation to COVID19, and consequently in the relaxation of health regulations, the meeting could be held in person for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

In addition to the Triple-C project consortium partners, a number of speakers were invited to enrich the meeting by sharing their experiences and expertise in relation to “Sustainability in a Changing Climate”, the central objective of the meeting.

The workshop, led by Darren Barry from TUS, started with a welcome by Padraic O’Reilly, Development maanger at TUS, to all participants in the meeting.

Diego Diaz (DEX Group) then gave a presentation on the objectives and guidelines of the Triple-C project. After his presentation, and as reflected in the agenda of the meeting, a series of presentations related to the objective of the meeting were made, allowing to share the results obtained in other projects.

In addition, each talk was followed by a lively debate between the different speakers and the members of the Triple-C project.

At 12:30 the meeting was brought to a close, and after a short lunch, the whole group headed off by bus to the TUS scheduled visit: Cabragh Wetlands & Rock of Cashel.

The Cabragh Wetlands Trust is an Irish environmental treasure that remains relatively free from human interference. It is home to the green-listed grey heron and feeding ground for the dwindling population of native bumblebees. Within its boundaries grow species of flora such as bronze fennel, wavy bittercress, shepherds’ purse, golden saxifrage, common mouse-ear, marsh strawberry and a huge variety of wild orchids. Various species of wildlife can also be seen, including numerous varieties of dragon fly, the rare hummingbird moth, Froghopper’s cuckoo, stick ear and a wide variety of sedges, grasses and reeds. The group enjoyed a frankly interesting tour guided by a local “druid”.

Rock of Cashel: or safety reasons, due to a week of high winds in the area, TUS decided to change the scheduled visit and head for Cahir Castle. However, from the bus we were able to enjoy the iconic scenery provided by the Rock of Cashel, arguably Ireland’s most impressive collection of medieval buildings. After a short drive, the project partnership enjoyed a very interesting visit to Cahir Castle, one of the largest castles in Ireland.
